Antithesis

From Greek antithesis: opposition. A central device of classical rhetoric; fundamental to the balanced couplets of 18th-century English poetry.

Definition

The juxtaposition of sharply contrasting ideas, often arranged in parallel grammatical structures.

Example

'It was the best of times, it was the worst of times.' (Dickens, opening of A Tale of Two Cities)
