Paradox
From Greek paradoxon: contrary to expectation. A defining feature of Metaphysical poetry (Donne, Herbert) and mystical verse. Eliot's 'impersonality' is itself a paradox.
Definition
A statement that appears self-contradictory or absurd but on reflection reveals a deeper or surprising truth.
Example
'I must be cruel only to be kind.' (Shakespeare, Hamlet, III.4)
