Jacinto Benavente (1866–1954) was a Spanish playwright and novelist. He was a prolific author whose works explored social customs, moral dilemmas, and the human condition. Benavente's style often blended realism with satire, and he was known for his sharp wit and keen observation of society. He studied law but abandoned it for a literary career. His first plays were produced in the 1890s, and he quickly gained recognition. In 1922, he was awarded the Nobel Prize in Literature 'in appreciation of the way in which the people of Spain have been presented by the brilliant writings of this author.' He was a member of the Royal Spanish Academy and remained a significant figure in Spanish literature throughout his life.
