Bio
Johann Peter Eckermann was born in Winsen on September 21, 1792. Coming from humble origins, his intelligence and dedication allowed him to study in Hamburg and later in Göttingen. His life changed dramatically when he met Goethe in 1822. He became his assistant and confidant, playing a crucial role in the organization and preservation of his writings. Eckermann's most important work is "Conversations with Goethe" (Gespräche mit Goethe), published in three volumes between 1836 and 1840. This work offers an intimate and detailed insight into Goethe's mind, covering his thoughts on literature, art, science, politics, and life in general. The "Conversations" are considered an indispensable source for the study of Goethe and a literary work in itself, highlighting Eckermann's insight and ability to capture the essence of his master. After Goethe's death, Eckermann continued to work as a librarian and to organize his friend's work. He passed away in Weimar on December 3, 1854.
