Disillusionment and Lost Love

What a miserable thing life is: you’re living in clover, only the clover isn’t good enough.

Do not let the hero in your soul perish, in lonely frustration for the life you deserved, but have never been able to reach.

Wishing each other, not divorced, but dead; They lived respectably as man and wife.

One should always be in love. That is the reason one should never marry.

Let us forget with generosity those who cannot love us.

Thy friendship oft has made my heart to ache: Do be my enemy – for friendship’s sake.

But what is Hope? Nothing but the paint on the face of Existence; the least touch of truth rubs it off, and then we see what a hollow-cheeked harlot we have got hold of.

It is impossible to read the daily press without being diverted from reality. You are full of enthusiasm for the eternal verities life is worth living, and then out of sinful curiosity you open a newspaper. You are disillusioned and wrecked.

A life directed chiefly toward the fulfillment of personal desires will sooner or later always lead to bitter disappointment.

How else but through a broken heart

Something was dead in each of us,

Yet each man kills the thing he loves,

Whoever thinks a faultless piece to see,

Four be the things I’d been better without:

Hence, vain deluding joys,

Love in a hut, with water and a crust,

The triumph of hope over experience.

No place affords a more striking conviction of the vanity of human hopes, than a public library.

When lovely woman stoops to folly and

Say what you will, ’tis better to be left than never to have been loved.

Heaven has no rage, like love to hatred turned,

Courtship to marriage, as a very witty prologue to a very dull play.

My days are in the yellow leaf;

Never glad confident morning again!
