Time and Its Passage

For those of us who believe in physics, the distinction between past, present, and future is only a stubbornly persistent illusion.

Time is the longest distance between two places.

Sed fugit interea, fugit inreparabile tempus.

Old age is the most unexpected of all things that happen to a man.

In any weather, at any hour of the day or night, I have been anxious to improve the nick of time, and notch it on my stick too; to stand on the meeting of two eternities, the past and the future, which is precisely the present moment; to toe that line.

As if you could kill time without injuring eternity.

It was my thirtieth year to heaven.

Oh as I was young and easy in the mercy of his means,

Every man desires to live long; but no man would be old.

Nought may endure but Mutability.

Life, like a dome of many-coloured glass,

The cradle rocks above an abyss, and common sense tells us that our existence is but a brief crack of light between two eternities of darkness.

Fly envious Time, till thou run out thy race,

Time is our tedious song should here have ending.

My candle burns at both ends;

When it’s three o’clock in New York, it’s still 1938 in London.

Stand still, you ever-moving spheres of heaven,
