The Conqueror Worm
Lo! 'tis a gala night
Within the lonesome latter years!
An angel throng, bewinged, bedight
In veils, and drowned in tears,
Sit in a theatre, to see
A play of hopes and fears,
While the orchestra breathes fitfully
The music of the spheres.
Mimes, in the form of God on high,
Mutter and mumble low,
And hither and thither fly --
Mere puppets they, who come and go
At bidding of vast formless things
That shift the scenery to and fro,
Flapping from out their Condor wings
Invisible Wo!
That motley drama! --oh, be sure
It shall not be forgot!
With its Phantom chased forever more,
By a crowd that seize it not,
Through a circle that ever returneth in
To the self-same spot,
And much of Madness and more of Sin
And Horror the soul of the plot.
But see, amid the mimic rout,
A crawling shape intrude!
A blood-red thing that writhes from out
The scenic solitude!
It writhes! --it writhes! --with mortal pangs
The mimes become its food,
And the seraphs sob at vermin fangs
In human gore imbued.
Out --out are the lights --out all!
And over each quivering form,
The curtain, a funeral pall,
Comes down with the rush of a storm,
And the angels, all pallid and wan,
Uprising, unveiling, affirm
That the play is the tragedy, "Man,"
And its hero the Conqueror Worm.

Alone
From childhood's hour I have not been
As others were; I have not seen
As others saw; I could not bring
My passions from a common spring.
From the same source I have not taken
My sorrow; I could not awaken
My heart to joy at the same tone;
And all I loved, I loved alone.
Then- in my childhood, in the dawn
Of a most stormy life- was drawn
From every depth of good and ill
The mystery which binds me still:
From the torrent, or the fountain,
From the red cliff of the mountain,
From the sun that round me rolled
In its autumn tint of gold,
From the lightning in the sky
As it passed me flying by,
From the thunder and the storm,
And the cloud that took the form
(When the rest of Heaven was blue)
Of a demon in my view.

Untitled - The happiest day — the happiest hour
The happiest day — the happiest hour
My sear'd and blighted heart hath known,
The highest hope of pride, and power,
I feel hath flown.
Of power! said I? yes! such I ween
But they have vanish'd long alas!
The visions of my youth have been —
But let them pass.
And, pride, what have I now with thee?
Another brow may ev'n inherit
The venom thou hast pour'd on me —
Be still my spirit.
The happiest day — the happiest hour
Mine eyes shall see — have ever seen
The brightest glance of pride and power
I feel — have been:
But were that hope of pride and power
Now offer'd, with the pain
Ev'n then I felt — that brightest hour
I would not live again:
For on its wing wall dark alloy
And as it flutter'd — fell
An essence — powerful to destroy
A soul that knew it well.

Sleep on, sleep on, another hour —
I would not break so calm a sleep,
To wake to sunshine and to show'r,
To smile and weep.
Sleep on, sleep on, like sculptured thing,
Majestic, beautiful art thou;
Sure seraph shields thee with his wing
And fans thy brow —
We would not deem thee child of earth,
For, O, angelic, is thy form!
But, that in heav'n thou had'st thy birth,
Where comes no storm
To mar the bright, the perfect flow'r,
But all is beautiful and still —
And golden sands proclaim the hour
Which brings no ill.
Sleep on, sleep on, some fairy dream
Perchance is woven in thy sleep —
But, O, thy spirit, calm, serene,
Must wake to weep.

To One in Paradise
Thou wast all that to me, love,
For which my soul did pine-
A green isle in the sea, love,
A fountain and a shrine,
All wreathed with fairy fruits and flowers,
And all the flowers were mine.
Ah, dream too bright to last!
Ah, starry Hope! that didst arise
But to be overcast!
A voice from out the Future cries,
"Onward!"- but o'er the Past
(Dim gulf!) my spirit hovering lies
Mute, motionless, aghast!
For, alas! alas! with me
The light of life is o'er!
"No more-- no more-- no more,"
(Such language holds the solemn sea
To the sands upon the shore)
Shall bloom the thunder-blasted tree
Or the stricken eagle soar!
And all my hours are trances,
And all my nightly dreams
Are where thy dark eye glances,
And where thy footstep gleams-
In what ethereal dances,
By what Italian streams.
Alas! for that accursed time
They bore thee o'er the billow,
From Love to titled age and crime,
And an unholy pillow!--
From me, and from our misty clime,
Where weeps the silver willow!

Se essa angústia de amar te crucifica,
não és da Dor um simples fugitivo:
ela marcou-te com o sinete vivo
da sua estranha majestade rica.
És sempre o Assinalado ideal que fica
sorrindo e contemplando o céu altivo;
dos Compassivos és o Compassivo,
na Transfiguração que glorifica.
Nunca mais de tremer terás direito...
Da Natureza todo o Amor perfeito
adorarás, venerarás contrito.
Ah! Basta encher, eternamente basta
encher, encher toda esta Esfera vasta
da convulsão do teu soluço aflito!

Oníricas metamorfoses
De longe um anjo parece voar
Nestes negros olhos que se parecem com as trevas
Estranhas feras na fronte singela
Fazem do anjo, demônio
E do homem, poeta
Um casulo envolve recôndita alma
Um sorriso esconde pútrido desejo
Escondido em seu corpo
Meu corpo eu vejo
Mas apenas um beijo o fará despertar
Em vão persigo nevoento olhar
Como se nele meu sono ousasse acordar
Como se nele meu pranto ousasse secar
A procura do encanto
Em seu sonho, sonhar
Ah!!

o estranho mar genial do Sentimento!

VOZ FUGITIVA
Últimos Sonetos
Às vezes na tu'alma, que adormece
tanto e tão fundo, alguma voz escuto
as essências do céu maravilhosas.
Procuro ansioso, inquieto, alvoroçado,
mas tudo na tu'alma está calado,
no silêncio fatal das nebulosas.

Egos-branon
Nas profundas mistificações de minha alma sangrando
Entrementes as vertentes do Rio Poseidon
Na longínqua galáxia imaginária de Egos-branon
Encontrei o que sou:
Viajante indelével de alguém que sonhou
Viajante indelével por entre mundos vazios
Flutuações cosmológicas e novembros frios
Viajante do estranho mito
Amálgama de caveiras sorridentes
Supercordas de um violino
E astronautas amarelos
Amálgama de partículas e desejos
Visões esculpidas em buracos negros
Cérebros falantes e macacos pequenos
Universos perdidos como bolhas ao vento
Em genes partidos
Em quantuns vendidos
Em ondas corpóreas
Que andam paradas
Viajante indelével da terra alada
Para além das estrelas
De várias dimensões
De ofuscantes teatros
E flamejantes paixões
Onde elétrons e prótons
Se beijam em atos
E as belas comédias
São homens que falam
Viajante indelével
Andarilho de corpos
Quarks de quasares
Que explodem e saltam
Nesta boca vermelha
