A poeta canadense Pat Lowther nasceu em Vancouver, em 1935, e cresceu nos arredores da cidade. Seu nome de batismo era Patricia Tinmuth. Em 1953, casou-se com Bill Domphousse, com quem teve duas filhas, separando-se em 1957. Em 1963, conheceu e casou-se com o também poeta Roy Lowther, assumindo o nome de Pat Lowther e passando a publicar poemas em revistas literárias de seu país. Sua estreia em livro viria em 1968, com o volumeThis Difficult Flowering, angariando atenção para seu trabalho na comunidade poética canadense. O próximo livro seriaThe Age of the Bird (1972), seguido deMilk Stone (1974). Seus poemas passam a ser frequentemente incluídos em antologias e ela começa a ensinar Literatura na University of British Columbia. A poeta estava também fortemente envolvida no ativismo político trabalhista no Canadá. Em 1975, o manuscrito de seu importanteA Stone Diary foi aceito para publicação pela prestigiosa Oxford University Press, mas teria apenas edição póstuma em 1977.
Pois, apesar de sua escrita poética tornar-se cada vez melhor e mais conhecida, sua vida doméstica preocupava também cada vez mais seus amigos, pois Roy Lowther, enciumado que sua mulher tivesse maior sucesso que ele como poeta, tornava-se cada vez mais violento. Na noite de 24 de setembro de 1975, Pat Lowther era aguardada no Salão dos Metalúrgicos de Vancouver para uma leitura de poesia para os operários, com os poetas David Day, Pete Trower e Patrick Lane, mas a poeta jamais apareceu. Seu corpo seria encontrado três semanas mais tarde; a poeta fora assassinada pelo marido.
Lançado no Canadá o volumeThe Collected Poems of Pat Lowther, editado por Christine Wiesenthal (Vancouver: NeWest Press, 2010), recuperando a voz de uma poeta de escrita delicada e firme, que poderia ter-nos doado muitos outros poemas lindos, como este "Before the Wrecker Comes", escrito quando não poderia saber que, em seu caso, o "demolidor" seria seu próprio marido.
