Denis Fonvizin was born into an aristocratic family in Moscow and, after a military education, dedicated himself to literature and diplomacy. His play "The Minor", written in 1782, premiered with great success and remains a landmark in the history of Russian theater, criticizing the ignorance and corruption of the elite. Fonvizin also translated foreign works and contributed to the press, advocating for social and educational reforms.
