Edgar Lee Masters was born on August 23, 1868, in Garnett, Kansas. He studied law and practiced it for many years, but his passion for literature led him to write poetry. His most famous work, "Spoon River Anthology" (1915), is a collection of epitaphs and monologues of deceased citizens of a small town, revealing their secrets, regrets, and aspirations. The book had a significant impact on American poetry, influencing generations of poets with its realistic approach and its restrained lyricism. Masters also wrote novels, biographies, and other works of poetry, but "Spoon River Anthology" remains his most enduring contribution to literature. He died on March 13, 1950.
