Nacido en Galicia, entonces parte del Imperio Austrohúngaro (actual Ucrania), Agnon emigró a Palestina en 1908. Comenzó a escribir en hebreo y publicó sus primeras obras en la década de 1910. Su estilo combina elementos de la literatura jasídica y talmúdica con un lenguaje moderno e introspectivo. Temas recurrentes en sus obras incluyen la diáspora, el exilio, la búsqueda espiritual, la relación entre el hombre y Dios, y la compleja vida del pueblo judío. Sus novelas y cuentos son conocidos por su profundidad psicológica, simbolismo y estructura narrativa intrincada. El Premio Nobel de Literatura reconoció su "arte narrativo singularmente lírico y la forma de vida del pueblo judío con una perspicacia incomparable".
