Nacido en Abeokuta, Nigeria, Wole Soyinka estudió literatura inglesa en la Universidad de Leeds, en el Reino Unido. Su carrera literaria floreció en las décadas de 1960 y 1970, con obras como 'The Lion and the Jewel' y 'Death and the King's Horseman'. Fue arrestado y detenido durante la Guerra Civil Nigeriana por intentar mediar la paz.
