Born into a working-class family in Ångermanland, northern Sweden, Johnson left school early and worked in various occupations, which profoundly influenced his writing. He was one of the founders of the literary group "Spektrum" in the 1930s and became a central figure in Swedish literature. His novels, such as "The Black Town" (Svart vagn), "The Book of Ulla" (Ulla min Ulla), and the tetralogy "Return to Your Country" (Återkomst till Eden), explore the struggle for dignity, the search for freedom, and the importance of memory and identity. Johnson was known for his clear and direct prose, his empathy for the marginalized, and his deep understanding of social change. The Nobel Prize was awarded to him "for a narrative art, which, broadly regional, is by dedication to the present, is also a timeless evocation of the human condition in its fragility and strength, and its endless adventure of exploration."
