Born in Växjö, Sweden, Pär Lagerkvist is considered one of the most important Swedish writers of the 20th century. His literary work is marked by a deep investigation into the human condition, man's relationship with God, and suffering. He began his career as a poet, but also excelled as a short story writer, novelist, and playwright. Among his best-known works are the novel "The Dwarf" (Dvärgen), the play "Victory in the Dark" (Seger i mörkret), and the poetry collection "The Man Without a Soul" (Den oformige själen). Lagerkvist received the Nobel Prize in Literature in 1951 "for his vigorous artistic illustration of human possibilities in search of answers to the eternal questions facing humanity." He passed away in Stockholm, Sweden, in 1974.
