Bio
Elfriede Jelinek was born in Mürzzuschlag, Austria, on October 20, 1946. Daughter of an Austrian father and a Viennese mother of Jewish origin, her childhood was marked by the austerity of post-war Austria and the shadow of Nazism. She studied music and art history, but soon dedicated herself to writing. Her literary work, which includes novels, plays, and essays, frequently provokes and challenges the reader. She uses an experimental language, often aggressive and ironic, to deconstruct social myths and expose the contradictions of contemporary society. Jelinek is a controversial figure, but widely respected for her courage in addressing difficult themes and for her incisive analysis of power dynamics. She currently lives in Austria.
