Charles Simic
Charles Simic (born Dušan Simić, May 3, 1938 – January 9, 2023) was a Serbian-American poet, essayist, translator, and professor. His work is widely recognized for its surreal imagination, dark humor, and profound exploration of the human condition.
Early Life and Experiences
Born in Belgrade, Serbia, Simic lived through World War II and the Nazi occupation, experiences that left deep marks on his worldview and writing. He immigrated to the United States in 1954, settling in New York. He served in the United States Army from 1961 to 1963.
